The history of Mother’s Day is centuries old and can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. Early Christians initially used the day to honor their “Mother Church.” They also celebrated a “Mother’s Festival” during Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. In England, in the 1600’s, the celebration began to include real Mothers, earning the name Mothering Day. During this Lenten Sunday, servants and trade workers were allowed to travel back to their towns of origin to visit their families and came bearing cakes and flowers for Mother. Mothering Day also provided a one-day reprieve from the fasting and penance of Lent as families enjoyed a sumptuous family feast—Mother was the guest of honor. English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday –perhaps due to lack of time. Another possibility, however, is that Mothering Day conflicted with their Puritan ideals. In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, who penned The Battle Hymn of the Republic, established a landmark in the history of Mother’s Day. Howe had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War that she called on Mother’s to come together and protest the futility of their Sons killing the Sons of other Mothers. She called for an international Mother’s Day celebrating peace and motherhood. The holiday nearly failed once Howe stopped providing the funding for the majority of these celebrations. Howe had nevertheless planted the seed that would blossom into what we know as Mother’s Day today Anna M. Jarvis also campaigned for the creation of an official Mother’s Day in remembrance of her mother and in honor of peace. Her request was honored, and on May 10, 1908, the first official Mother’s Day celebration took place at Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia and a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Andrew’s Methodist Church exists to this day, and was incorporated into the International Mother’s Day Shrine in 1962. In 1908, U.S. Senator from Nebraska, Elmer Burkett, proposed making Mother’s Day a national holiday at the request of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). The proposal was defeated, but by 1909 forty-six states were holding Mother’s Day services as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. Anna Jarvis quit working and devoted herself entirely to the creation of Mother’s Day, endlessly petitioning state governments, business leaders, women groups, churches and other institutions and organizations. She finally convinced the World’s Sunday School Association, a key influence over state legislators and congress, to back her. In 1912 West Virginia became the first state to officially recognize Mother’s Day, and in 1914 Woodrow Wilson signed it into national observance, declaring the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

Which Type of Wedding Flower is Best Suited to Withstand Heat?

19th ianuarie, 2012 - Posted by Flowers.md Fresh Flowers Moldova - 1 Comment

Often the best days for a wedding are warm, hot even, and while this might be good for the bride and groom, it can wreak havoc on delicate flowers. Choosing a wedding flower that will stand up to the heat and look great throughout the ceremony and even long afterwards can be hard. You want something that is beautiful and fit for a bride, but still sturdy enough to hang in there, even in high temperatures. What to Look For A good wedding flower is delicate looking, but not actually that fragile. It will withstand the summer heat and look terrific doing it. You have enough worries and stresses on your wedding day, flowers should definitely not be one of them, so select hardy flowers from the very beginning and you`ll be able to focus on more important things, like actually getting married. Here are some of the characteristics to look for in a heat-resistant wedding flower. • Thick, waxy petals are best. They tend to be stiffer and hold moisture in longer than thinner petals which tend to shrivel and wilt in the heat. The thicker the petal, the stiffer it will be, making it more resistant to wilting. • Stiff leaves help with heat resistance, too. Leaves contain a lot of moisture that can be wicked up to the bloom and the greenery helps enhance the color of the wedding flowers. Wilted leaves make the entire bouquet look sickly, so thicker, waxier leaves are the best option. • Sturdy stems keep flowers upright. Florist’s can place flower stems in plastic straws to help keep them upright when the heat threatens to send them drooping downwards, but it`s best to choose the right flowers with sturdy, thick stems that are strong enough to stand up even when slightly dried out. • Full blooms stay fresh longer. Flowers that are more than just a few petals will last longer. Look for ruffled petals or multiple rounds, such as with a mum or carnation. These flowers do very well with holding in the moisture needed to survive a hot day, even when not placed in a vase of water. If you have the budget, tropical flowers tend to be far better than our native blooms when it comes to withstanding the hot interior of a church or reception hall. They are grown in heat, so you`ll find that they are quite hardy when it comes to summer weddings. Most tropical flowers are very elegant, as well, so they make for very lovely bouquets and centerpieces. Flowers like orchids, lilies and dahlias are all great ones for a wedding flower. They hold up to the heat very well and can take long drought periods, thanks to their hardy leaves and petals that retain moisture even in stifling conditions. Your florist will also be able to recommend a more heat resistant wedding flower or two. The ideal would be a flower that you love the look of, which combines beauty with functionality. For a summer wedding, how well the flowers will stand up to the heat is a very important consideration. There is nothing more stressful on your wedding day than discovering that all your blooms are wilting away in the intense heat. Choose your wedding flower carefully. You don`t want bouquets that look awful by the time you are ready to walk down the aisle. Tropical flowers, those with waxy, thick petals and leaves and any flower that is bushy and full of petals tend to be alright and will look great throughout the entire day Read More

Flowers vs. Plants: Which is a Better Gift?

18th ianuarie, 2012 - Posted by Flowers.md Fresh Flowers Moldova - No Comments

When it comes to giving gifts, many people opt for flowers as a default gift that all people will enjoy. However, plants (which tend to last longer) can be just as excellent a gift for any occasion. Choosing Plants as Gifts A plant is a great present for someone who has space for it. Of course, plants don’t have to take up a lot of room and you can even choose one that can be replanted into an outside garden if the recipient is more likely to enjoy an outdoor addition. As a gift, plants should be something special. That doesn’t mean you have to pick a flashy plant, or one that is flowering, though this can be very nice. Look for a plant that will mean something to the recipient. If you know your friend loves ficus, for example, because they remind her of her mother, then go ahead and get her a ficus. It will mean far more than an African violet or another prettier plant. A few advantages to selecting a plant as a gift: • They can be replanted. • They last longer than cut flowers. • A plant can be placed anywhere in a home. • Plants add oxygen to the air. Be sure to opt for a plant that requires the level of care that can be afforded by the recipient. An exotic orchid might not be the best choice for someone who has a brown thumb and is seldom home, but a fern or even a cactus could be a far better gift in this case. Choosing Flowers as a Gift Flowers are a more traditional gift than plants, but that doesn’t make them any better. For some people, those who simply have no desire to own plants or who can’t keep even a cactus alive, flowers are a great choice. Of course, they also make a good gift for any special occasion like the arrival of a new baby, an anniversary or even a job promotion. With such a wide range of flowers available to choose from, you’re bound to find something ideal for the person you have in mind. It really helps if you can find out what their favorite flowers are, but you really can’t go wrong with a bright, beautiful bouquet, whether it’s made up of Gerber daisies or roses. It’s a good idea to tailor the flowers to the relationship, as well. A dozen red roses for a co-worker aren’t very appropriate, but a bouquet of mixed flowers is. If you want to give roses to a friend, stick to non-romantic colors like yellow, coral or gold and shy away from red and pink which can be mistaken as a completely different gesture. Flowers also lend themselves to small gift inclusions, like a teddy bear for a new baby, a bunch of chocolates for a loved one or a figurine for that special someone in your life. These extras can add a lot more meaning to your gift and will be appreciated long after the cut flowers wilt and die. Whether you opt for flowers or plants as a gift, you’ll be making the right decision. They are both excellent gifts that are enjoyed greatly by the recipients. Which one you choose depends mostly on personal taste and what the recipient will enjoy most. Flowers and plants make for a more unique gift than many of the standard options and can be a fun way to mix it up a bit, especially if you add in a little extra gift tucked into the foliage. Limbajul florilor

16th ianuarie, 2012 - Posted by Flowers.md Fresh Flowers Moldova - No Comments

Originile trandafirului

15th ianuarie, 2012 - Posted by Flowers.md Fresh Flowers Moldova - No Comments

Epuizata de atatea cereri in casatorie, Rhodanthe s-a ascuns in templul prietenei ei, Diana. Din pacate, aceasta a devenit geloasa, iar atunci cand petitorii au navalit in templu pentru a o gasi pe mult iubita Rhodanthe, Diana s-a infuriat si a transformat-o pe frumoasa fecioara in trandafir, iar pe petitorii acesteia in spini. Legenda romaneasca spune insa ca Dumnezeu a creat trandafirul, iar diavolul i-a creat spinii. In legenda greceasca, trandafirul a fost creat de Chloris, zeita florilor, din trupul unei nimfe gasit fara suflare in padure. Chloris a rugat-o pe Afrodita, zeita iubirii, sa-i ofere trandafirului frumusete, pe Dionis, zeu vinului, sa-i ofere un parfum dulce, iar pe cele trei Gratii sa-i ofere farmec, stralucire si bucurie. Read More

Fun ways to brighten up with flowers

13th ianuarie, 2012 - Posted by Flowers.md Fresh Flowers Moldova - 1 Comment

Flowers are special. That is so serious sounding. We use flowers for serious occasions like a wedding or a fancy dinner party. We send flowers to wish someone speedy recovery or to send love to survivors of the dearly departed. I think flowers should also be fun. Flowers’ bright and cheery nature calls for its use in bright and cheery occasions. I often take flowers home just because I can. Flowers can also be a source of  joy when you arrange them just for yourself. No need to take it seriously. Pick up a bunch of gerbera daisies at your local florist and plunk them into a tall thin cylinder vase with some bear grass. Letting them fall every which way gives them a playful look. The same goes for tulips. The taller French tulips make even more of a statement. I am passionate about flowers. I don’t have any preconceptions about which flowers are trendy and which are not. I love them all. It is OK to pick up a bunch of carnations for the home. There are so many new varieties of these amazing flowers in so many incredible colors. Cluster a bunch of natural green ones and mix them with the new dark purple ones in a purple vase for a vibrant setting. Some other flowers that are severely overlooked are chrysanthemums and gladiolus. Mums are long lasting and also come in several shapes. Try mixing varieties in a heaping bundle on a coffee table. Gladioli placed in a vase are impressive on an entrance table. They can be collared with a base of assorted greenery for a fuller look. Imagine red gladiolus against a hot pink wall or green ones against a purple or plum wall! When dahlias are in, I would mix different varieties and cluster them tightly in a low ceramic bowl. They look good anywhere. A single stem of phaleonopsis orchids or cymbidiums set in a vase exude a sophistication that is unmatched. It does not have to be a special occasion to use flowers. Pick up a mixed bunch of flowers when you are just visiting friends. Most florists will custom mix your bunch for you. Have fun picking and choosing your colors and flowers. If you know where the flowers will be placed, have the florist arrange the bunch so that it will be ready to be placed into a vase with the right mix of colors and flowers. It is also fun to arrange them with your friends. I always recommend that the bunch of mixed flowers can be separated and placed in several different containers. That way, every room will be beautified with flowers. A couple of roses in a bud vase for the bedroom or a stem of dendrobium orchid florets floating in a bowl on a coffee table or an assortment set in a vase for the dinning table…all from that bunch of flowers you brought. Remember to do this for yourself as well because you deserve flowers! Read More
